Many homeowners solve that with a dual-fuel setup that pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace, running the efficient heat pump most of the time and letting the furnace take over on the coldest days.

How to Decide

The right answer depends on your local energy prices, your climate, whether you already have ductwork and gas service, and how you weigh upfront cost against long-term operating savings. A home that needs both a new furnace and a new air conditioner is a strong candidate to consolidate into a single heat pump. A home in a very cold region with cheap gas may do better with a high-efficiency furnace. And plenty of households land on the dual-fuel middle ground.
