The Cheapest Maintenance Task With the Biggest Payoff
If there’s one thing Summit Home Services wishes every homeowner did religiously, it’s changing the air filter. It costs a few dollars, takes two minutes, and prevents a startling number of the AC repair calls we run every summer. So how often should you actually do it? The honest answer is: it depends, but here’s how to figure out your number.
The General Rule
A standard one-inch pleated filter should be replaced every 60 to 90 days under normal conditions. Thicker four- or five-inch media filters can last six months to a year. But those are starting points, not gospel, several factors push the interval shorter.
Pets in the House
Dander and fur clog a filter fast. If you have a shedding dog or cat, check monthly and expect to replace every 30 to 60 days.
Allergies or Respiratory Concerns
If anyone in the home has allergies or asthma, a cleaner filter means cleaner air. Change it more often and consider a higher-MERV filter that captures finer particles, part of a broader indoor air quality strategy.
Heavy Use Season
During peak summer when the AC runs nearly nonstop, filters load up faster than in the mild months. Check monthly during a heat wave.
Recent Construction or Renovation
Drywall dust and sawdust will clog a filter in days. Swap it right after any project.
Why It Matters So Much
A clogged filter is the root cause behind a huge share of summer breakdowns. When airflow gets choked, the evaporator coil can freeze, the system strains, and efficiency drops, meaning higher bills and a harder-working compressor. In the worst cases, a starved system overheats and needs real air conditioning repair. A two-dollar filter prevents a several-hundred-dollar service call.
How to Check It
Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, it’s done. If it looks gray and matted, it’s overdue. Note the size printed on the frame so you buy the right replacement, and mark the direction of the airflow arrow when you reinstall it.
Make It a Habit
Set a recurring reminder on your phone tied to the first of the month.
